SSN By Leif Kothe NEWS POLL Has your company benefted from new telecom/cableco ads? Has your company benefted from a partnership with telecoms or cablecos? Do smaller professional security companies have an edge over the new players? ESSE RIVEST, regional sales manager for Affliated Monitoring in Union, N.J., studied computer science in college with the goal of getting into computer networking. That changed when he was hired at Visonic Americas, where a stint in technical service evolved into a niche in feld sales. He rose through the ranks to become sales manager, then joined Affliated in 2011. He added another accomplishment this year when he was named as a "20 under 40" honoree by SSN. Here's how he handles security for his family. What kind of system do you have? In my home we use 2GIG Go!Control along with Alarm.com, and of course Affiliated Monitoring. When we moved into our home there were wireless GE sensors already installed, so I bought a Resolution Products translator that easily allowed me to [integrate them] into Go!Control. We also use Z-Wave thermostats, Z-Wave door locks and light modules. Why this particular setup? Being a young family always on the move, we needed the ability to control on the run. Also, the touch screen [on the panel] makes it easy for my daughter to use the system. What is the one aspect of your security system that you wouldn't want to live without? I couldn't live without the ability to control my system from my phone. I rarely ever use the touch screen, even when I'm home. The home automation features are nice, too. There is no doubt that I have saved money on my heating and cooling because of them. Where do you see security going next? What are some big trends? I think security will continue to expand and integrate with devices in the home. Security will become more of an easy-to-use hub for customers to control multiple devices. This will add value and help keep customers from forgetting about their systems. News Poll based on answers provided by 46 respondents in June and July. —Rich Miller
