sECuRItY sYstEMs NEWs august 2013 EDItORIaL www.securitysystemsnews.com Tim Purpura, PUBLISHER tpurpura@securitysystemsnews.com S Deals and lawsuits O mUCh for the conventional wis- dom—around our offce anyway— that not much happens in the security industry in the summer. July 2013 was not its typically quiet self. as a result, this newspaper is full of news, notably deals and a couple of lawsuits. On the front page are two giant deals. Tyco security Products decided to diversify its product offerings with the purchase of Vms provider exacq, for $150 million in cash. The biggest deal in July, however, was monitronics' agreement to purchase security networks for $507 million (also on page 1). This deal will beef up moni's dealer program by more than 30 percent and bring its customer base to more than 1 million. security networks had been growing at an impressive clip over the past several years, so this deal also brings a major com- petitor into the monitronics fold. regional monitoring players were also busy in the early summer. starting on page 24, you can read about nationWide digital monitoring Comppany's expansion of Martha Entwistle its footprint into the southeast, opening a new offce in north Carolina. also on page 24, dynamark is on the move. The wholesale monitoring company, which was out of the industry for a while and then re-entered two years ago, acquired a central station in Ohio. deals in the resi space included four by asG security—one of asG's acquisiitons is in long island, a new market for the super- regional. and speaking of long island, alarm Capital alliance acquired a company based in the hamptons. lawsuits also dominated the headlines in early summer. Tyco integrated security sued isC, a smaller competitor, and then isC turned around and countersued Tycois. Security Systems News spoke to Jean Pierre nogues of mitchell, silberberg & Knupp about the case, who offered some interesting comments about the considerations involved in cases that center around trade secrets and non-compete agreements. For more in-depth versions of this and other stories, please visit www.securitysystemsnews.com. another lawsuit this summer was fled by software provider iControl against competitor alarm.com. This lawsuit follows an alarm. com lawsuit fled several weeks ago by against Telular, an iControl partner. stay tuned as we follow these cases.
