Supporting Families Across America NEWS By Spencer Ives YARMOUTH, Maine—Ahead of Security Systems News' upcoming 2018 TechSec Solutions confer- ence, it asked readers about sev- eral of the topics from this year's program, including artificial intel- ligence, the next tech for access control, and how IT is impacting the integrator. These three areas—AI, access control and IT—are going to be covered at Security Systems News' 2018 TechSec Solutions confer- ence among other tech topics in the security industry. "As AI becomes more embed- ded in the life-safety and secu- rity of the coming 'everything connected' world, it will require human integration to allow the speed and security of a super intelligent source to operate, SSN News Poll: Readers weigh in on top trends in AI, access control and IT monitor and control devices of greatest risk," one respondent wrote in. When asked about which technology will be big in access control in the future, respon- dents were almost evenly divided between biometrics, with 35 per- cent of responses, mobile creden- tials with 32 percent, and build- ing automation and big data with another 32 percent. Seventy-one percent of respon- dents said that they are already seeing AI applications in secu- rity. Twenty-nine percent see a possibility for AI to apply to the security industry, but are not sure about it. Zero respondents said that AI doesn't have potential in the security space. IT is disrupting the industry, but it also represents an opportunity, according to 79 percent of respon- dents. Eighteen percent said that IT is not a problem for the secu- rity industry. Three percent indi- cated another opinion. "Initially it will be as it has been, slowly creeping into the life-safety and security domains, but soon IT will become the ulti- mate user and provider through the disruptive Human/Machine/ AI interface," one reader said. "AI will be very present in our industry; it will and is presently replacing human bodies," said another. TechSec Solutions will be held Feb. 26 and 27, 2018, at the Delray Beach Marriot in Delray Beach, Fla. Does AI have real-world applications in security? Is IT disrupting the security industry? News Poll based on answers provided by respondents in December and January. Gonza- lez talked with S e c u r i t y S y s - t e m s N e w s i n early December about her home security system and what she likes about it. What kind of security system do you have? I have a … 2GIG with Alarm.com. I have thermostats and lights, video cameras. Why this particular setup? At the time, 2GIG was a very user-friendly panel. I've had it for a couple years now—about two and a half years—and it just met all of the needs. We were moving into a new home and decided to go that route. Talked with a couple of my dealers and got some recommendations on what they were using out in the field and wanted to understand the feature sets of the product that a lot of our dealers were using. What is one aspect of your security system that you wouldn't want to live without? I love the fact that you can unlock and lock the door and dis- arm the panel from the mobile app. I can give my kids separate codes and know when they're coming and going. Where do you see security going next? What are some big trends? I think we're going to continue to see home automation and security continue to thrive on the same platforms, where you get a lot more integration with devices—we're seeing it more and more now. I think obviously … going away from wired systems to Wi-Fi-type systems seems to be where more people are headed. —Spencer Ives How I Use My s yste M Gonzalez uses a 2GIG alarm panel.
